In the post-war situation, the communists stifled any possibilities for free activity among the political opposition. To maintain the appearance of democracy, after 1956, the presence of a few deputies representing Catholic circles in the parliament was allowed. However, they were fully under the state’s control. Primate Wyszyński was aware of the game being played by the communists and the task that fell at that moment on the Church in Poland and on him personally. The role of the primate, as ‚antemurale’ (a term Wyszyński used to describe the tasks of the primate of Poland at the time of Cardinal A. Hlond’s death), was to preserve the of the Christian nation and to support the people of the Church – both clergy and laity – so that they would not be tempted by the communists to surrender their intellect and Catholic worldview to the service of a formation that destroys internal sovereignty and
the character of Poles.
