Abstract

St. John Paul II was a strong defender of human rights and religious freedom. During the Soviet occupation, when Lithuania and the other Baltic countries suffered under the communist regime, the Pope openly expressed his support for the Baltic nations. In 1993, he visited Lithuania, which was a special event for this country. During this pilgrimage, he encouraged Lithuanians to preserve their national and cultural identity, as well as to fight for freedom. John Paul II was also a great supporter of rapprochement and dialogue between Poland and Lithuania. While differences and historical issues inherited from the past created tensions between the two nations, the Pope sought to build bridges and promote reconciliation. His pilgrimages to Poland and Lithuania were an expression of openness and concern for good relations between the two nations.
