In the teaching of John Paul II, the issue of human rights, especially the right to freedom, occupies a special place. The fundamental place among the rights of freedom is occupied by the right to religious freedom, understood as the right to the world of one’s own beliefs based on a conscience seeking truth. The right to religious freedom understood in this way is the basis of all liberty rights. Religious freedom is the deepest dimension of freedom, it is also the reason and basis of all rights due to a human being, which results from the personal dignity due to every human being. This position is expressed in the title of the Message to the Secretary-General of the United Nations: “Religious freedom as the basis of human rights”.
