Wolność religijna – wrodzone prawo czy przywilej władzy?

Grzegorz Sokołowski

Abstract

There is a foundation of religious freedom in human dignity. Human dignity is confirmed both in documents on the level of international law and the legal order of states, and in the teaching of the Catholic Church. The key element of human dignity is freedom understood both as the exclusion of external compulsion (freedom „from”) and the freedom „to” seek truth, good and other higher values related to the worldview and religion. Religious freedom and the related freedom of conscience must be placed in this context. The task of the political community is to uphold religious freedom. Over the centuries, the involvement of the political authority in professing the faith by subjects was differently understood. Currently, the pursuit of the state’s ideological neutrality means that e very religion can be practiced and professed, and not eliminated from the public space.
