Ludność żydowska w Polsce po II wojnie światowej

Zarys problematyki

Marcin Szydzisz

Abstract

The article is an attempt to comprehensively, though for understandable reasons briefly, describe the problems of the Jewish population in Poland after World War II. Polish Jews experienced the Holocaust the most painfully, out of the 3.5 million citizens of the Second Polish Republic of Jewish origin, about 10% survived. After the war, some of them intended to rebuild their lives in post-war Poland. Unfortunately, various circumstances made it impossible. Manifestations of anti-Semitism – post-war and those from 1956–1957 – as well as the anti-Zionist campaign (1967–1968) and the policy of the communist authorities forced a large part of Jews and people of Jewish origin to emigrate. The transformations after 1989 enabled the comprehensive development of Jewish life in our country. Various types of initiatives, organizations and activities appeared to serve this purpose. Although the Jewish community in Poland is small, it is very visible and still influences Polish culture and social life in our country.
