Abstract

Polish sovietology and German Ostforschung. About the Eastern European Scientific-Research Institute in Vilno and the Institute of East European Economy in Königsberg

The study is devoted to the origins of Polish sovietology and German “East-European studies” (Ostforschung) during inter-war Europe. The author tries to re-examine Polish and German attitudes to sovietology. In the short era of Polish-German détente (1934—1938), the Polish Instytut Naukowo-Badawczy Europy Wschodniej in Wilno (Vilnius) and the German Institut für Osteuropäische Wirtschaft in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) established some sort of cooperation. This episode requires special attention because it has been neglected in Polish and German historiography.
