Abstract

The aim of the present article is to outline a few chosen passages of ancient literature,
in which wine – deliberately used for persuasive purposes – influenced the literary
characters’ behaviour and thus shaped their physical reality. In these narratives,
wine has a double effect: it can cheer people up, but it can also tame them with its
strength.
