Abstract

Propaganda has always been present during the wars, since antiquity to modern times. However, in current wars, it constitutes an indispensable element, determining their outcome. The First Chechen War, which was undertaken by the Russians without much disinformation and propaganda preparation, showed the Russian public a true picture of bestiality in the Caucasus owing to the intervention of independent journalists. After V. Putin took power, the bombings initiated by him, as well as the information blockade of the Chechen Republic, cut off Russians and foreign observers from reliable information. Terrified by the repeated bombings, Russian citizens gave public approval to their authorities for the bloody pacification of Chechnya. Russians' growing support for the new president is a sign that his media policies have found their way into the Russian public, which has approved the government's portrayal of the enemy — a Chechen terrorist. The author of this article aims to show the impact of the negative image of Chechens in the pro-Kremlin media on Russian society during the period of the Second Chechen War.
