Cultural dialogue or promotion of ideas? - the Situation of Christianity in the Republic of China in the Light of the selected interwar magazines in the Years 1931-1939

Abstract

Polish interwar journalists devoted a lot of space in their texts to the issue of the development of Christianity in its various branches (Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox). They usually focused on showing the activities of Christian organizations, showing the influence of the elites on the spread of Christian religions, and describing the missionary activity of the Churches. Hiowever they sometimes made factual errors or disseminated simplified visions of reality, not supported by scientific knowledge. In particular, we are talking about the use of slogans, as well as the spread of stereotypes (for example, unsubstantiated judgments about a higher level of Chinese morality than that of the West). It is also worth noting that the tone of the articles on the role of missions in the development of Christianity in China was primarily propaganda. The journalists emphasized the charitable activities of the mission more than the activities aimed at spreading Christian morality and Western cultural patterns (different from those represented by traditional Chinese beliefs, such as Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism). In this article, I tried not only to show what stereotypes about the development of Christianity in China appeared on the pages of magazines, but also to show what goals journalists had in describing their activities.
