The article highlights the most important aspects of priestly spirituality, the centre of which is Christ, his teachings and the mission he left to his closest collaborators. Through the fact of the priest’s union with Christ, the unconditional dependence of his person on the person of Christ the High Priest has been emphasized, which is most fully expressed in what tradition has defined by the term character indelebils, which directly belongs to the sacramental dimension of the priesthood. It’s sacramentality guarantees that every priestly vocation is not a human work, but a gift from the Lord to the community, whose task is to ensure it’s proper interpretation. Through the sacrament of ordination, the priest participates in the threefold mission of Christ, the purpose of which is to teach, direct and sanctify the members of the Mystical Body of Christ. Help for the priest on this path of the proper realization of the priestly mission is provided by Mary, who, being in an extremely intimate relationship with Christ, faithful to God, unconditionally subordinated her will to His will. The article was written mainly on the basis of numerous statements by Pope Benedict XVI published in L’Osservatore Romano and the thoughts of Joseph Ratzinger included in Opera omnia.
