The article presents an analysis of the Bashkir version of the 19thcentury missionary text On the Afterlife According to the Teachings of the Orthodox Church (1899), one of the earliest printed monuments in the Bashkir language. The first section, authored by Lidia Abubakirova, discusses the historical background of the translation, its dependence on earlier missionary adaptations into other Turkic languages (Kryashen Tatar, Chuvash, Tatar, Altai), and the compilatory nature of the Bashkir version, including semantic and syntactic errors indicating that the translator was not a native speaker of Bashkir. The second section, written by Wieńczysław Daniel Czerniewski, offers an interpretation of the text through the lens of religious freedom, imperial language policy, and contact sociolinguistics. It highlights the ambivalent character of the Orthodox mission among the Bashkirs, its connections with Russification processes, and the value of the text as a source for the study of the history of the Bashkir language, dialectology, linguistic interference, and the interaction between Islamic and Christian cultures at the end of the 19th century. The combination of linguistic and religious-studies perspectives provides a multifaceted view of the monument and demonstrates its significance for understanding language development and identity processes within Bashkir society.
