Abstract

Alcoholism is a serious social problem that negatively affects children growing up in families where it is present. These children experience a variety of emotional, social, and spiritual-religious disturbances that together constitute the ACOA syndrome. Individuals affected by this syndrome may encounter numerous difficulties in adult life, such as professional burnout, depression, and challenges in interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, they may develop a distorted image of God, resulting in problems with forgiveness and prayer. They require support in the recovery process, in building healthy relationships with God, and in integrating into society. The Church can play an important role in this process by providing holistic support. The author of the article presents selected methods of pastoral accompaniment by the Catholic Church in Poland for individuals affected by the ACOA syndrome. First, the essence of the ACOA syndrome is outlined (1), followed by a presentation of the biblical and theological foundations for the Church’s pastoral accompaniment to those affected (2). After describing selected forms of the Church’s ministry in Poland in this area (3), the author formulates conclusions and pastoral recommendations (4).
