As the world continues to evolve and change, pastoral care of the fam- ily, which begins with marriage preparation, becomes pertinent. This is particularly important because the health of any civilization depends on the health of its family. The article examined the chal- lenges faced in the Middle Belt of Nigeria among young Christians preparing for marriage and family life. It examined a long-held practice of a tripartite marriage system, which came into focus with Western colonialism and Christianity. Even though this encounter brought different cultures and civilizations together, it also imposed some social requirements in forming marriage and family life. Some of the requirements were analyzed in depth, showing the divergent limitations of the tripartite marriage system, and highlighting some values that can be pastorally helpful as the Church prepares young people for marriage. The pastoral proposals in the articles are not only crucial in the Middle Belt but can be considered in other parts of Africa (and beyond) where the same or similar challenges impede evangelization.
