Abstract

Over the years, blessing has changed not only in its external form but, above all, over the centuries people have understood the meaning of these sacramentals differently. The Old Testament, in which we find the source of the blessings (the Beatitudes), shows that blessing has a pragmatic nature. People beg for God’s favor to get specific material benefits. The New Testament interprets blessing, first of all, as a spiritual good for believers. The understanding of the word ‘blessing’ has radically changed over the centuries and it is hard to determine the direct line in comprehending this gift of God. However, it remains unchanged that starting with the first men, until today people have constantly asked for God’s favor and His grace. The aim of this article is to show the origin of this sign through the analysis of biblical texts and the way God works in these rituals. The attitude of people towards the blessings will also be shown.
