Scriptural Basis for the Ministry of the Permanent Diaconate

Scriptural Basis for the Ministry of the Permanent Diaconate

Ryszard Sejdlak

Abstract

Deacons and their diaconal ministry are solely mentioned on three occasions in the New Testament. These include: Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians 1: 1; Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy 3: 8-13; and Acts of the Apostles 6: 1-6, 8-15; 7; 8: 4-13, 25-40. The Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians (1: 1), which is the earliest reference, mentions the presence of Deacons and their collaboration with Bishops in the Christian communities established by Saint Paul. Moreover, their existence is confirmed in the Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy, (3: 8-13), which highlights the moral qualities that ought to characterise candidates for the Diaconate and mentions the way in which they are to be introduced to the community of Deacons. The Acts of the Apostles, however, references the probable institution of Deacons by the Apostles (6: 1-6). Furthermore, the successive verses speak about the functions of Deacons that go beyond charitable activities, to include preaching and the administration of Baptism, as evidenced in the lives of Stephen and Philip. In this context, one can say that the texts of the New Testament present Deacons as those who make a greater effort to imitate Christ the Servant, who, by the power of the Holy Spirit, encourages the whole Church to serve others and inspires the world to adopt a spirit of service.
