Poverty – a sign of the time for the Church in Latin America from the perspective of the Conference in Medellín

Dariusz Pabiś

Abstract

The year 2015 witnessed the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council. Undoubtedly, it was an event of great importance for the universal Church. For Latin America, a key role was also played by the Second Episcopal Conference of Latin America, which took place a half century ago, in 1968, in the Colombian city of Medellín. The aim of the Conference was to adapt the Council’s reflections on the Church and the world so that they suit the realities of Latin America. The bishops urged to study the signs of the time that allow us to see the specific areas of the Holy Spirit’s work in the world and effectively respond to the challenges present in various human experiences and needs. One of the basic signs of the time recognized by the Conference’s participants was poverty in Latin America. This particular problem, affecting a large number of people, urged the Church to take some concrete actions.
