Abstract

The article shows how the legal instruments of the Council of Europe and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights balance the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy.

Bio Statement (e.g., department and rank)

Urška Umek was born in Slovenia in May 1975. After graduating in law, she took the position of a legal adviser at the Slovenian Constitutional Court. In 2008, she worked for a year as a lawyer-linguist at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Upon her return to Slovenia, she headed the Constitutional Court’s research department until 2012, when she took a position as a lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights. In July 2016 Ms Umek joined the Council of Europe’s Information Society Department, where she works on a wide range of freedom of expression related issues.
