Abstract

This article presents the findings of a study on the relationships of Paralympians from Poland and Ukraine with journalists and their assessments of their own media image. The analysis is based on six semi-structured in-depth interviews. The research identified recurring narrative patterns in which athletes with disabilities are portrayed mainly as “superheroes” or “victims,” leading to the marginalization of the sporting dimension of their achievements.

Respondents highlighted the limited and seasonal media interest in Paralympians, the lack of journalistic reliability, and the frequent use of stereotypical expressions. At the same time, they formulated recommendations for more accurate language and a systematic approach to reporting on disability sport. Although pilot in nature, the study provides important insights into media representations of Paralympians and indicates the need for further research in this area.
