Abstract

In the work of Zofia Kossak, we encounter numerous descriptions of Polish customs linked to dying. In particular, she shows the meaning of presence next to the dying person, dying as a time of reconciliation, dying in one’s home, vigil next to the body of the deceased, rituals connected to the funeral, wake, All Souls Day and other forms of remembering the deceased person. In the perspective of the author, these customs result from understanding humans
as living in community. They help people discover the
relationship with previous generations, with their family, with neighbors, the region and country. They protect them from feeling alienated, cynicism, chronic fear, desire for revenge, despair. Zofia Kossak refers to Christian customs with respect, but she does also to the ones that have existed before, many of which carry lasting values. However, customs of peasants are shown to little extent.
