Previous research has not dealt with the issue of national freedom and enslavement from tha perspective of guilt and punishment, which is present in ancient literature, as a separate issue. However, it was an important thread of thought in the reflections of moralists of the Old Polish period. In the literature the phenomenon of enslavement was seen within the framework of divine justice. The relationship between sin and punishment, administered by God to entire communities was pointed out. Both slavery and freedom were understood as expressions of God’s action in history. Moralists aimed to warn the Polish society against a possible loss of independence as a result of sinful behaviour, and at the same time to encourage moral improvement and thus – to prevent a catastrophe.
