Abstract

The research aims to determine what religious symbols are used to build the world depicted in a contemporary film dealing with a vocation in the Roman Catholic faith. We used content analysis, comparative analysis, and analysis of the structure of the film work in our research.  We also used the semantic current, indicating the importance of the symbol in the film.  Ricoeur or Eliade believed that a symbol (the operation of a symbol) is evidence of man's relationship with the sacred. Therefore, the symbol gives the film a religious character in some sense. Thus, the interpretation of the film is an attempt to decipher the symbol, which is simultaneously present in two realities - concrete (geographic-historical) and non-concrete - everywhere and nowhere. The analysis showed that the film "Called" not only contains a larger array of symbols and sacraments but also allows for a deeper reading of them, releasing more meanings than the Oscar-nominated film by Jan Komasa "Corpus Christi."
