Abstract

The article presents the results of a study conducted as part of a research project of the Center for Monitoring Internet Citizen Journalism of Warmia and Mazury carried out at the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The basis of the research were interviews conducted according to a pre-structured plan with 43 representatives of the citizen media of Warmia and Mazury, conducted from June 2021 to March 2023. The research shows that the main issues for citizen media creators are not, as one might expect, financial or organizational problems, but rather problems with hate speech and comments that exceed the boundaries of cultural public discourse. Hate speech is perceived by the creators of citizen media as an inherent feature of Internet communication, which may have a negative impact on the psyche of the creators of online citizen media. They choose various strategies to deal with hate speech, which include: accepting hate as an inherent feature of online communication, not attaching excessive importance to this type of message and focusing on positive messages, ignoring this type of content, blocking some comments, avoiding topics that may cause controversy and engaging in a calm discussion with haters.
