Abstract

The foundation of media studies is journalism, the status and professional standards of which are the subject of discussion by representatives of the profession, researchers and the public alike. The debate over the condition of journalism, has been going on since its birth and has evolved with the development of the media. Before the First World War, in the Polish lands, when the press market was already developed and diversified, there were calls for the formal education of journalists, whose influence on the formation of public opinion was already unquestionable. In 1917, women were able to enter the first journalism studies on an equal terms with men, but their path to the journalism profession was much more difficult, if only through limited access to education and jobs. The purpose of this article will be to analyze the content of the memoirs of the first female journalism student Wanda Kuszell (Rostworowska), preserved in the Archives of the National Library in Warsaw set in the context of the development of the journalism profession and the role of education in shaping media culture.
