Abstract

The subject of the article is the activities of the media aimed at reducing the sense of shame and approving behavior inconsistent with the rules of savoir-vivre. The research concerns behaviours related to clothing, and more broadly – personal image – in the public/media space. The aim of the article is to show the role of the media in shaping the attitudes of young people through information control (selective promotion of information, obfuscation of content) and promotion of behavior inconsistent with the principles of good manners.

The presented empirical research was carried out by the method of participant observation, case analysis and content research aimed at determining and describing the linguistic features of texts in order to explain the non-linguistic properties of their authors (attitudes, evaluations, intentions). A case study on the media's reaction to a selected Instagram post shows the media's actions, including manipulation, undertaken to direct the viewer's attention to the content they have chosen and to reduce the importance of shame as a catalyst for cultural behavior. The presentation of the results of the research is embedded in literature research on the role of the media in controlling the perception of the recipient and the role of the media in activities aimed at depreciating the importance of personal culture in social communication, among others by eliminating the importance of shame.
