The article discusses the development of EU law regarding renewable energy sources (RES) over the last twenty years. Legislative activity undertaken during this period was aimed at establishing a common framework for promoting “green” energy and increasing the share of RES in gross final energy consumption in the EU. Thanks to the adopted regulations, mechanisms of financial support were created with the aim for the production of RES energy for its faster introduction to the market. Those processes contributed to the acceleration of the energy transformation in the EU Member States
