The article outlines the problem of development of the concept of sustainable development in the historical perspective, showing at the same time the process of its shaping on the European Union agenda and in the national legal order. First of all, it contains a review and analysis of activities and agreements of a regional nature aimed at implementing the principle of sustainable development. Its fulfillment is impossible without popularisation and intensive use of renewable energy sources. It refers to the issue of sustainable development as a constitutional principle in the Polish legal order.
