Abstract

The text of 1Kings 8:56-61 presents the words of King Solomon, concluding his prayer on the occasion of the dedication of the Jerusalem temple. In the first sentence, Solomon blesses YHWH for the gift of rest. In the Old Testament texts, the concept of rest is not unambiguous. The presented study attempts to answer the question about the nature of the rest mentioned in 1Kings 8:56. The issue of the content-literary structure and diachrony of the passage 1Kings 8:56-61 is discussed. Exegetical analysis, taking into account the conclusions in this regard, allows us to conclude that in the text of 1Kings 8:56-61 we have a testimony to the development of the biblical concept of rest given by God. The deuteronomistic-exilic view of the earlier concept of rest (v. 56) is reinterpreted in the context of the post-exilic situation (v. 57-61). In the new concept, the foundation of rest has been shifted from God’s faithfulness to trust in Him and obedience to His law.
