The Theory of Culture as Seen by Joseph Ratzinger - Benedict XVI – An Outline of the Problem

Abstract

In this article there was described culture in Joseph Ratiznger’s understanding. This topic has not been dealt with in a wider context so far. The scientific achievements of the German theologian have great scientific description, especially from the theological and philosophical perspective. The main purpose of this article is to introduce the retired pope’s theory of culture. The core of the theory are the three most important subjects: man, community and the relationship between faith and reason. Additionally, the text presents a short characterization of the source of the crisis of culture called by Ratzinger cultural relativism, which also strongly influences in the three mentioned issues. This article is an analysis of Ratzinger’s most important works from a cultural studies perspective: Faith, truth, tolerance – Christianity and world religions, Introduction to Christianity and Europe Benedict in the crisis of cultures.
