Abstract

The problem of life after death has been the concern of many biblical authors. At first, there were only allusions to eternal life, and only with time did the doctrine of the resurrection of bodies become outlined. This process of development of thought includes Targum Neofiti 1, which often addresses the issue of the "world to come". The New Testament, on the other hand, is in many places a continuation of the targumic ideas that link the two parts of the Bible. This paper therefore presents the development of the biblical idea of eternal life from the Old Testament, through the targumic texts and up to the New Testament eschatology. Terminological references are shown as well as a similar understanding of many eschatological concepts. The idea of "the world to come" allows for a deeper insight into the salvation message proclaimed by Christ.
