Abstract

The article analyzes the papal messages for World Youth Day in terms of the variability of emphasis placed by subsequent popes with a view to the development of youth pastoral care as a social group. Capturing the variability of accents is crucial when planning the Church’s ministry strategy for young people today. The very characteristics of the Pope’s messages at WYD are varied due to the circumstances in which the messages were written over the last forty years of Church history. The summarized messages show three fundamentally different types of thinking about youth pastoral care in the Church. John Paul II appears in them as a moralist theologian, Benedict XVI as a dogmatic theologian, and Francis as a pastoralist theologian. Due to the references to various areas of theology, individual popes clearly distinguish emphasis, understood as the foundations of the organization of youth pastoral care, today also understood as accompanying young people in their lives. In the article, through a critical analysis of the messages, you can find practical conclusions in the form of instructions addressed to people responsible for the formation of young people in the Church.
