Abstract

The following article presents the results of the focus study commissioned by the authors to the Institute of the Catholic Church Statistics. This research covered the baptismal awareness of 44 academia students from Warsaw and Cracow, who are in some ways related to different university chaplaincy centers, led both by the dioceses, religious orders and parishes. The study conducted in 2016 proved that the narrations of these students have been carefully thought-out, appearing as very internalized. The test subjects sho- wed a proper understanding of the basic theological concepts concerning the Holy Baptism, are able to use them in a critical way, expressing thus the theological essence of this sacrament. The religious identity of the students refers in an integral way to the Holy Baptism. The test subjects recognize the key role of this sacrament as far as their own religious identity is concerned and the Holy Baptism is directly related to the Church community as the basis of the religious identity. The national identity of these students refer to the historic event which was the Holy Baptism of Mieszko I of Poland, who was the ruler of the Polans from about 960 until his death in 922. The respondents acknowledge the direct effect that this happening had on the forming of the Polish nation as a whole and only in the religious context. They also clearly differentiate between the religious and national identity, although according to them being a Catholic does not mean being a Pole. However, they understand the links between these two identities, but on a deeper level referring to the moral identity.
