The article examines the book Memory and Identity: Conversations at the Dawn of the Millennium by John Paul II (2005) from the point of view of patriotism as an educational value. The article seeks to find the definition of patriotism and explain how it was formulated by the Pope. Therefore, the article is divided in two parts: Part I deals with the metaphysical and theological nature of the Papal reflection on patriotism, while Part II addresses the issue of the supernatural dimension of patriotism. Finally, the article points out that the Pope considers patriotism as a moral value that can also be viewed from the perspective of Christian faith. Based on the text of Memory and Identity, the article is an attempt to clarify the issues which relevant to the religious context of patriotism. These are: the ultimate purpose of human life, the presence of evil, the relationship between an individual and a community.
