Psychological grounds for adult pastoral care

Zbigniew Zarembski

Abstract

Adult pastoral care is the Church's saving activity addressed and adapted in its methods and forms to adults. It is a part of ordinary pastoral work, which aims to lead the faithful to meet God in faith and love. They can also be included in extraordinary pastoral care, i.e. care addressed to groups and individual people in a given environment who, due to living conditions and special religious needs, cannot sufficiently benefit from ordinary pastoral care. However, regardless of its place in the pastoral activity of the Church, it should always be adapted to the spiritual, intellectual level, age and occupation as well as the special needs of adults.

The purpose of this publication is to identify selected elements of adult psychology relevant to pastoral ministry. The author's attention focused on the criteria of adulthood, giving psychological characteristics of middle-aged people, developmental changes and the issue of religiosity. For pastoral care, middle-aged people are both the subject and the object of pastoral influence. The knowledge of middle age psychology indicates that human development is still ongoing and does not end with adulthood, but it requires support especially on a religious level.
