In his article Defending Moderate Abolitionism, Fr. Andrzej Szostek, MIC, defends the thesis that the teaching of the Church on the death penalty can be called a moderate abolitionism. According to him, this attitude assumes that the death penalty is morally unacceptable, although there might be some situations when it is justified until. In this meaning, the exceptional acceptance of the death penalty constitutes a task for the society (the authorities) to make an effort in order to go from this abnormal situation in the direction of normality, i.e. a complete abolishment of the death penalty.
