Abstract

The reader is presented with an article concerning the teaching of the Holy Scripture as adopted by the Society of Jesus in the territories of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from the introduction of the order until the mid-17th century. It analyzes the methods by which biblical instruction was carried out, taking into account both educational and pastoral contexts. Based on the historical-documentary analysis method, the article examines manuscript sources – including the lectures of Baltazar Wolboriusz and Tomasz Bolesławiusz, students of Konstanty Szyrwid SJ – as well as the Ratio studiorum and other Jesuit documents. The study reconstructs didactic methods and highlights the significance of biblical studies in Jesuit formation, particularly in the context of confrontation with Protestantism. Special attention is given to the teaching activity of Konstanty Szyrwid SJ at the Vilnius Academy. The article also attempts to fill a research gap regarding the tradition of biblical teaching within the 17th-century Jesuit order. The final part presents the surviving biblical lecture manuscripts from the first half of the 17th century by Tomasz Bolesławiusz and Baltazar Wolboriusz of Poznań.
