Abstract

The article explores the literary description of the Marian shrine at Loreto written by Blessed Baptista Mantuanus (1447–1516), a prominent Christian poet of the Renaissance. Despite its historical significance, this work has received little attention in the research on the shrine. The origins of the text can be traced back to a brief period in the history of the Loreto Basilica when it was under the administration of the Carmelites, the order to which Blessed Baptista Mantuanus belonged. He played a crucial role in the spiritual renewal of the order at the end of the 15^th century, and his personal devotion to the Virgin Mary is reflected in the work. For the first time, this article presents a Polish translation and a scholarly analysis of the text. Written in the 15^th century, the work gained popularity and was translated into Italian shortly after its publication. It is divided into three main parts: a description of the miraculous transfer of the Holy House to Italy, an account of the events related to the expansion of the sanctuary and the Carmelites’ stewardship, and a demonstration of the exceptional nature of Loreto by comparing it to other places in salvation history.

Elżbieta Górka – a PhD student at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Wrocław (Poland). Her doctoral dissertation is aimed at analyzing the collection of eclogues by Battista Mantovano (1447-1516) in terms of imitation and (re)interpretation of the ancient sources. Her research interest include ancient Latin poetry (particularly bucolic, epic and elegy), theory of literary genres, and Neo-Latin poetry (with a special reference to Christian literature). She has held research internships at Università di Padova and Technische Universität Dresden. She has published in “Terminus”, "Przestrzenie Teorii", "Academic Journal of Modern Philology".

Krzysztof Bekieszczuk – theologian specialising in Church history, classical philologist and sanskritist. He graduated from the Pontifical Faculty of Theology, the University of Wrocław and the University of Kerala in India. He is currently a doctoral student at the Faculty of Philology, University of Wrocław, where he is preparing a dissertation on the scholarly writings of missionaries active in India until the end of the 18th century. He has held research internships at Pontificia Università San Tommaso d'Aquino, Università di Napoli L'Orientale and Università di Catania. Author of the first Polish translation and commentary on Erasmus of Rotterdam's "Treatise on Free Will", the book was awarded the Feniks 2023 distinction by the Association of Catholic Publishers. Member of the Polish Philological Association and secretary of the Wrocław Branch of that organisation. Academic interests: Church history in the modern era, liturgics, diachronic linguistics.
