Representations of spirituality on the Internet. Selected aspects of the mediatization of spirituality

Abstract

Purpose: The basic research problem of this article is to describe online representations of different forms of spirituality and to identify their characteristics. The representations are treated as one of the symptoms of the process of the mediatization of spirituality and are modeled on the social representations of Serge Mascovici. Method: In the author's analyses, quantitative and qualitative analysis of the content of websites was used to show textual realizations of representations of spirituality. The research material for the content analysis is a catalog of sites with 100 natural search results using Google's Internet search engine and the keyword spirituality. Results: The article contains a description of media representations of spirituality: spirituality in popular science literature; spirituality of religious communities, institutions, associations; relationship: spirituality – media and relationship: spirituality – science. Media constructions were also presented: religious spirituality (theistic), Christian spirituality, non-religious spirituality (without religion), inclusive spirituality and different configurations of new spiritualities. The cognitive value: The presented findings are part of the systematization of research on the processes of the mediatization of spirituality on the Internet in the context of the mechanism of extension mediatization.
