Abstract

Nature of youth media as entertainment causes their consumers to unquestioningly accept the heavily ideological contents present therein. After 1989 the majority of media addressed to the youth touches upon trivial subjects, with progressing homogenization of content being a threat to development of young recipients in of itself. They teach consumption and utilitarian attitude in all aspects of life, and sexual themes they present pervert the image of human sexuality recipients have. Manipulation techniques utilised: ingratiation and fragmentation allow those media to shape an
incomplete view of the world and hasten the erosion of values fundamental to the young generation’s lives. Youth entertainment media make use of the psychological traits of their audience to manipulate and shape them into regular customers. Even though audio-visual media have an age restriction rating system, they entice the youth to watch the inappropriate content. Review of selected
shows reveals they can only be considered anti-educational. Actions of youth entertainment media seem to be purposeful, shaping the market for adult media – which are just as infantile in their nature. Values propagated by those media are not intended to support the consumers’ development and as such are an antinomy for education. Catechetical and pastoral activities should be oriented to counteract the anti-educational influence commercial media has on the youth.
