The importance of the hymns of St. Venantius Fortunatus in the Liturgy of the Hours

Krzysztof Filipowicz

Abstract

Hymns of Saint Venantius Fortunatus occupy a special place in the Liturgy of the Hours. This is evidenced by the fact that they are used primarily in the liturgy of the Paschal Triduum, which after the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council is indicated as the heart of liturgy and Christianity in general. Hymns of Saint Venantius Fortunatus were always recognized as the top of sacral poetry; they were never removed or changed duering liturgical reforms. Their themes are remarkably redemptive, focusing on the fruit of Christ’s Passion. On the one hand, we have brutal realism of passion, on the other hand, the passion of Christ is seen as a gift of his selfless love.
