On Central European Identity

Abstract

The aim of this article is to indicate the specificity of the identities of Central European nations and religious communities both in terms of sameness and distinctivness. This is achieved through the structure of the article, which consists of four parts. The first defines the concept of collective identity. The second part shows the geographic, geopolitical and geocultural shape of Central Europe. The third part indicates the importance of religion in the process of building and strengthening national identities in the Central European region. In the fourth and last part, the cultural and philosophical differences between Central Europe and Western Europe were analyzed, referring to the results of empirical research. As a result of the conducted analyzes, the basic cultural and civilization differences, with particular emphasis on the religious sphere, were indicated, between Central Europe and the Asian East, on the one hand (in historical meaning) and Western Europe (in contemporary meaning).
