Abstract

Pope Francis and Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb signed a joint declaration on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi entitled “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.” Mutual brotherhood flows from faith in God in both Christian and Islamic traditions. In the course of analysing the problematic reception of the document, it became apparent that the two traditions, although differing significantly in their conception of God, can together speak “in the name of God” in matters of peace and human coexistence. The growing distance of the world from religious values requires a shared responsibility for interreligious dialogue. Despite the difficulties, the act of agreement between Catholicism and Islam has symbolic and prophetic value. It can result in greater interreligious understanding and acceptance, even if it does not lead to visible and spectacular changes in mutual relations.
