Abstract

The current structural tension between various Orthodox Churches can fill us with pessimism and bitterness. One of the dominant elements of this state of affairs is internal rivalry, inspired mainly by the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), which ultimately assumes a change in the current order of authority in Orthodoxy, advancing an unrestrained reform in the field of ecclesiological doctrine. In the background of this situation, there is the problem of the extraordinary competences of the Ecumenical Patriarch, thanks to which he can also decide to establish autocephaly for a particular Orthodox community. The basis for considering the above-mentioned issues is the establishment in December 2021 under the patronage of the Moscow Patriarchate of a new Orthodox exarchate in Africa. Based on this event, the subjects of special analysis are: the canonical significance of the decision of the Synod of the ROC, the desire to change Orthodox ecclesiology, the questioning of true sacramentality and the attempt to reduce the Eucharistic synaxis.
