Mammism, which was defined by the Supreme Tribunal of the Roman Rota as a subform of emotional immaturity, was examined in two Rota's judgments: from 2011 and 2014, authored by the same editor, Pio Vito Pinto. The concept of "mammism" refers to the pathological emotional dependence of an adult man on his mother, which can lead to consensual incapacity to enter into marriage. This phenomenon is related to dependent personality disorder (DPD), characterized by an excessive need for care and submissiveness, lack of independence in decision-making. In the first case, it was considered that the excessive subordination of the man to the mother prevented the creation of a marital community, while in the second it was proven that this dependence influenced the partial simulation of marital consent. An important element of evidence in both cases were the opinions of psychologists and the analysis of the family environment. Both judgments emphasiz the need to prove that these disorders existed before the marriage in a serious form. Both cases showed that mammism causes consensual incapacity in the area of a grave lack of discernment of the evaluator can. 1095 º2 and prevents the undertaking of the essential marital obligations in accordance with can. 1095 º3.
