Abstract

This article examines the financial conditions of John I Albert’s Moldavian campaign of 1497 based on accounting records. It explores issues related to the standing defence (Polish obrona potoczna) of Ruthenia, particularly the expenditures on mercenary troops. The study analyses military expenses using payment registers for cavalry and infantry captains (pl. rotmistrzowie), who served in Ruthenia in 1496 and during the Moldavian campaign in 1497. Additionally, the article provides insights into the broader circumstances of the campaign, including the Tatar attack on Podolia, the burning of Trembowla, and armed clashes that took place in Ruthenia in the first half of 1497. The financial analysis helps to better understand the reasons behind John I Albert’s significant military effort in launching the Moldavian campaign.
