Andrzej Wantuła began his studies at the Faculty of Evangelical Theology at the University of Warsaw in 1925. He came from a family known for its efforts to promote Polish identity in Cieszyn Silesia, where clergy often served as both spiritual and national leaders. Following this tradition, Wantuła was destined to become a clergyman. In his final year of studies, after completing his coursework, he decided to expand his theological knowledge at French universities. He left Poland on October 29, 1929, and travelled through Vienna, Zurich, and Geneva before reaching France. His first stop was at a higher education institution in Montpellier. He also participated in an expedition to the Middle East, visiting present-day Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Egypt. After spending the summer in Paris, he continued his studies at the University of Strasbourg. In total, he spent nearly a year and a half in the West before returning to Poland in March 1931. This article focuses on this first “emigration” period of his life.
