Growing up in a dysfunctional family and imprisoning one of the parents causes negative consequences in child’s development. This article describes five stories of teenage boys, pupils in the Salesian Youth Centre, whose parents were sentenced to imprisonment. The author presented their childhood memories when their fathers were convicted and situations they experienced as well as emotions that accompanied them. On the basis of the interviews with the boys, the author also indicated which of their development needs were not fully met, including safety, acceptance, support and contact.
In the summary the author discussed elements of the educational system used in the Salesian Youth Centre, with an indication of how the educators' actions can impact and help meet the needs of the children from dysfunctional families, including children of prisoners.
