Abstract

St John the Baptist is an important figure in the New Testament. By announcing the coming of the Son of God, he becomes like an Old Testament prophet who, by proclaiming God’s message, is a bridge betweenthe Creator and man. Although the fate of Christ’s own cousin ends tragically, his contribution to the Kingdom of God seems inestimable. The water of John’s baptism becomes a foreshadowing of Christ’s baptism with the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, from a political point of view, St John’s action and prophecy create an enemy for him in the shape of the tetrarch Herod Antipas,who, caring not at all for the life of the prophet, chooses to fulfill the wish of Herodias, denying John the chance of a proper defense and condemning his to death.The aim of this article is to introduce the alleged site of the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, which was the fortress of Macheront, once part of the territory of biblical Perea, but now lying within the Kingdom of Jordan. From both a biblical and a historical-archaeological point of view, the identification of Macheront as the site of St John’s death has many supporters and no fewer opponents.
