Abstract

The aim of the article is to present Gilbert Keith Chesterton as the
precursor of the Second Vatican Council. The following methodology has been adopted in the article. Firstly, the legacy of the Council is “functionally” (and with the use of the writings by the Council’s philosopher, Jacques Maritain) reduced to three aspects: including the liberal political tradition in the Catholic structure, initiating the process of interreligious dialogue and looking for a specific “secular style” of Christian spirituality. Secondly, one confirms the presence of these three
elements in Gilbert Keith Chesterton’s thought and writings.
