Abstract

The Council of Nicaea, held in 325, played a crucial role in defining the fundamental doctrines of the Christian Church and is essential for contemporary theological reflection. Understanding its history and initial reception is essential to assess its relevance in today’s scenario, especially in the context of the ecumenical movement. In 2025, the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea fits into a significant historical context, which includes other milestones such as the Jubilee of Hope and the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. These anniversaries, together with ecumenical commemorations, reinforce the importance of the Council of Nicaea in the history of the Church. The event not only formed the doctrinal basis, but was also central to the contemporary ecumenical movement, which seeks to overcome historical divisions between Christian denominations. Reflection on the Council of Nicaea, particularly the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Symbol, is seen as an opportunity to promote Christian unity by overcoming the prejudices and polarisations that persist.
