Abstract

The Slavic Apostles Cyril and Methodius left a priceless legacy throughout Europe in the 9th century that might be characterized as spiritual fraternity, equality and unity in the diversity of many nations. Their legacy from the time of undivided Christianity has never lost its power or ceased to have an impact. In Velehrad, proponents of the Cyrillomethodian unification ideas sought to make this point very evident, even in the first half of the 20th century, when ecumenical sensitivity was growing. The aim of this article is to provide a theological analysis of the significant aspects of the Velehrad Congresses dialogue project, in which Roman Catholics, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox of the Moscow tradition played key roles. The process of historical theological and ecumenical debate will be discussed in the first section. The liturgical foundation of the Church’s tradition, which unites the faithful, shall be the subject of the second section. The phenomenon of church unions, which have long been a source of contention and discussion in ecumenical dialogue, will be covered in the third section. The establishment of the framework for a sustainable and responsible unification approach is the theme of the fourth section.
